Lanzarote is a place like none other in the world and is not deserving of the Lanzagrotty tag, often glibly mentioned by people who have never been. Yes all major holiday centres have their tourist concentrations but the great majority of the island is unspoilt to such an extent that it is designated as a Biosphere by the United Nations, as a place with outstanding and unusual interest. There are few volcanic archipelagos that have remained uncovered by foliage and unaffected by erosion. Over 300 volcanoes remain in pristine condition with the Timanfaya Volcano park attracting thousands of visitors yet still remaining unspoiled, thanks to careful management by the National Parks Department.
Apart form its wonderful beaches, all colours, not just black, the island has much to offer in cultural attractions, thanks to the legendary work of Cesar Manrique who designed and built many eco edifices which are well worth a visit and only a short journey away. In fact there is so much to see in a small area that it is worth hiring a car. The road system is excellent and not busy outside the main tourist areas. Petrol is a lot cheaper than the UK and it would be unusual to get through more than 10 Euros worth in a week.
